Wire material for pasture fences

Flat wire, wire, stranded wire and rope for various types of pasture fencing – suited to the type of fence, area of use and requirements for wire routing.
The conductor material transmits electrical impulses along the electric fence and is therefore a key component of any electric fencing system. Depending on the type of fence and its intended use, different materials and designs may be suitable. At Fritz Göbel, you will find pasture fence strands, wide tapes, wires and electric cables in a variety of designs. When making your selection, factors such as the type of fence and the type of animal are important, but visibility, mechanical strength and electrical conductivity play a particularly significant role. Differences arise, for example, from the number and material of the conductors incorporated, the resistance and the breaking load.

Which type of wire
is suitable for my pasture fence?

Strand, flat cable or rope?

The choice of suitable wire material depends on the type of animal, the fence design and the intended use. Pasture fence wires are light and flexible and are particularly suitable for mobile fences, rotational grazing and small paddocks, as well as temporary fencing. Thanks to its larger surface area, wide-band fencing offers good visual visibility and is available from Fritz Göbel in various widths. Electric cables combine good visibility with a robust design and are also available in different thicknesses and conductor configurations.

Wire for permanent fencing systems

As well as the type of conductor material, the products also differ in their electrical and mechanical properties. The number and material of the conductors influence the current-carrying capacity; resistance and breaking load vary depending on the design. Fritz Göbel also offers a range of wires for permanent fencing systems. When making a selection, therefore, the fence length, intended use and load should be taken into account, as should suitable insulators and connectors.

Frequently asked questions about
wire materials for pasture fencing

Whether it’s horses, cattle, sheep or goats – the right material for your fencing depends on the type of animal, the fence design and the intended use. Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about choosing wire strands, flat tape, rope and wire.

Visibility, durability and the intended use of the fence are key factors in the selection process. Fritz Göbel recommends wire fencing in particular for mobile pasture fencing, rotational grazing and compartmentalised pastures, as well as for cattle and sheep farming. With horses, the high visibility of the fencing is also a key consideration, which is why, for example, wide tape or highly visible electric wire may be suitable options. For permanent fencing systems, a range of different wire solutions are also available.

Horses should be able to clearly recognise the boundaries of their paddock. This is why the visibility of the fencing material is particularly important for horse fencing. Wide-strand, highly visible paddock ropes can be suitable solutions for this. The most appropriate design and fencing configuration will depend on the specific horse paddock. You can find further information on putting together a paddock fence for horses here.

Wire strands are particularly suitable for mobile and frequently repositioned pasture fences due to their light weight and flexibility. Fritz Göbel offers plastic wire strands with varying numbers of conductors and electrical properties. As a general rule, the number and material of the conductors influence the current flow. When making a selection, therefore, resistance and the requirements of the specific fencing system should be taken into account alongside ease of handling and fence length.

Due to its larger surface area, wide-width tape offers high visual visibility and can be a suitable solution, particularly for horses and other larger grazing animals. Fritz Göbel offers pasture fence tapes in various widths, including 10, 13, 20 and 40 mm. The appropriate tape width depends on the fence and its intended use; insulators and connectors must be compatible with the respective width.

Wire is particularly suitable for permanent fencing systems where a robust and long-lasting installation is required. Fritz Göbel offers various types for this purpose, such as galvanised iron wire and aluminium wire, as well as other wire-based conductors. The products differ in terms of, amongst other things, conductivity, breaking load and ease of handling. Which variant is suitable depends on the specific fence design and intended use.

For longer pasture fences, it is particularly important that the conductor material has low electrical resistance, so that the electrical pulses are conducted as reliably as possible along the entire length of the fence. The number, gauge and material of the conductors all influence conductivity. In addition to the conductor material, connections, insulators, earthing and the electric fence energiser used also affect the performance of the entire fencing system.

Fritz Göbel offers suitable tape, rope and wire connectors for a range of conductor materials. If different conductors are used within a fencing system, the connections should be designed to suit the respective materials and dimensions to ensure a reliable flow of current.
